National Party seeks support from ASU24 July 2007John and Janette Howard may have never invited Peter Costello and his wife to dinner but the National Party is inviting the unions to eat with them! The New South Wales wing of the National Party has written to the Australian Services Union (ASU) seeking their involvement in a supporters' programme geared towards a win for the Liberal-National coalition at this year's federal election. ASU National Secretary Paul Slape said, "We were a bit mystified when we received their letter. That they had decided to approach a trade union for support when their organisation has actively sought to undermine ours is quite interesting!" The Nationals wrote, "As our Party now focuses its energies on securing a strong victory for the Nationals and the Coalition at this year's Federal Election, we ask for your support." The ASU wrote to the Nationals declining their invitation. "When the National Party and its coalition partners decide to enshrine a workplace policy that is fair to workers and ceases demonising their unions, we may consider supporting them," said Paul Slape.
