Captain Community Comes To Darwin …14 April 2008Launches Union/NTCOSS Campaign For Social Inclusion Through A Strong Community Sector Into The Future
Urgent issues threaten the non government community sector's capacity to deliver quality services to the most disadvantaged Territorians into the future. In a social environment where need and complexity of need is growing, stakeholders in the sector have got together to address these urgent issues. The Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS), Australian Services Union (ASU) and Liquor Hospitality Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) have formed a campaign group of workers, employers and peak bodies. The group is committed to addressing issues and building a strong and sustainable workforce for the future. "If Territory and Federal Governments are serious about social inclusion, it is imperative that they ensure they have a sector equipped to face the challenges ahead" said NTCOSS Director Wendy Morton. "Workers in the sector are committed to enhancing the lives of the clients with whom they work but are finding it increasingly difficult to stay in the sector. According to a recent ASU national survey, 57% of workers in the sector do not see themselves in the sector in five (5) years. This is an alarming statistic; a statistic which does not bode well for meeting the needs of our more disadvantaged citizens" said ASU Branch Assistant Secretary Katrine Hildyard. "Low pay, lack of training and career paths, lack of access to long service leave and other entitlements and the inability of employers to attract and retain staff because of these issues must be addressed if we are to create a vibrant workforce" said NTCOSS Director Wendy Morton. Captain Community will break down the wall of disadvantage with her workforce reform tools at the campaign launch at 3.30pm at Darwin Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, 16 April 2008. Captain Community is not to be missed! For further details and comment, please contact Katrine Hildyard on 0418 847 865 or Wendy Morton on 0418 482 660.
