ASU and LGA Work Together to Review Award Classification Structure13 May 2010Australian Services Union and Local Government Association Work Together to Review Award Classification Structure for Local Government Workers. Classification Structure Review The ASU is aware of the number of reclassification appeals that are occurring in Local Government as a result of the out of date classification structure contained within the SA Municipal Salaried Officers Award. The ASU has commenced a project jointly with the Local Government Association of SA (LGA) to review and assess the required changes to the Classification Structure to reduce the need for reclassification appeals and to ensure that equity is maintained across Councils in the classification of positions. The project will focus on effectively consulting with key Councils and Council employees, identifying issues with the structure, reviewing the current structure and updating criteria to reflect skills, knowledge, experience and tasks/activities inherent in performing work. The ASU will be consulting Councils and Council employees during May, June and July to establish whether the current SA Municipal Salaried Officers Award classification structure is relevant and effective and to identify issues with the current structure and will then summarise information gleaned into an issues paper and plan and develop amendments to the current structure. Benefits of the Project to ASU Members within Local Government This project will give ASU members the opportunity to have input into a change that will benefit them by -
Who will be Undertaking the Project? The ASU's Project Officer Sue Beaumont, will be working in collaboration with Rob Wallace from the LGA to achieve a revised Classification Structure that reflects the current roles within Local Government. What's Next and How Can you be Involved? The ASU's Project Officer Sue Beaumont will be contacting various Councils throughout the month of May to arrange focus groups with workers and relevant Human Resources and management personnel. As a result of these focus groups with ASU Workplace Reps, members and other workers we will confirm required changes to the Classification Structure. As these focus groups will provide a key information gathering opportunity all ASU members are strongly encouraged to attend. Look out for a meeting time at your Council or in your region.
