ASU thrilled at Brumby Government Announcement for SACS Workers21 June 2010After years of campaigning, the Australian Services Union is thrilled at today’s announcement of the Brumby Government’s support for the Equal Pay claim for social and community services (SACS) workers across Victoria.
ASU Branch Secretary Brian Parkinson said that the announcement - made today at an ALP State Conference - is music to the ears of thousands of underpaid workers in the sector, who care for Victoria's most disadvantaged citizens.
"This is an important day for Victorian social, youth and community workers who are dealing with those at the frontline of need, and for too long have had their skills and work undervalued. The ASU and its members have campaigned long and hard for decent pay and conditions in a sector that has, for too long, been overlooked." ASU Assistant Secretary Lisa Darmanin, who has helped lead the campaign, including a mass rally on 10 June at the steps of parliament house, says SACS workers have finally received the recognition they deserve.
"It is an important recognition of the historical undervaluing of a women-dominated industry, with most working for an average of $15,000 less per annum than their government equivalents."
"It is imperative that the State Government - who are the predominant funding body for these important services - provide the necessary recognition through increased funding for workers in these services."
