ASU National Secretary Paul Slape Enters Retirement10 November 2011After 46 years in the Union movement and 14 years as ASU National Secretary, Paul Slape was farewelled in Melbourne in early September. IN BRIEF:
After 46 years in the Union movement and 14 years as ASU National Secretary, Paul Slape was farewelled in Melbourne in early September. His 14 years as ASU National Secretary has been a period of stability and consolidation that has been a testament to his leadership. Paul extended his thanks to everyone who has supported him over the years. "First and foremost I want to wish the ASU all the best for the future. I sincerely believe that the ASU has further great potential to grow and that the prosperity of our members relies on that growth. "Since the amalgamation in 1993 to form the ASU, the organisation has been reforming and modernising itself. There is always much further to go in this process and I urge the ASU to keep forging ahead to ensure that we remain relevant and effective. "In terms of the Union movement as a whole, it also needs to keep pace with the broader community to make certain it is able to meet its core reason for existence - to ensure that the rights of working people are defended and advanced. "I thank the Branches of the ASU and all members of the National Executive for their support over the years. More particularly, I am grateful to the staff of the ASU National Office whose efforts have ensured our success - my heartfelt thanks to the whole team."Paul's commitment to his Union was paid tribute by the Prime Minister Julia Gillard, staff members, the Secretary of the Victorian Services and Authorities Branch Brian Parkinson and staff members amongst others. David Smith, former Secretary of the Queensland Services Branch has now commenced in his new role as National Secretary. We wish Paul a happy and healthy retirement and David success in his new role.
